While the Mesa 3 and Mesa 2 look identical, there is a significant performance difference. With its much higher CPU performance, the Pentium N4200 processor crushes the older Atom Z3745. And it should. This is a much more sophisticated processors, and also a more costly one: Intel sells the N4200 for more than five times as much as the Atom Z3745. Does the Mesa 3's increased performance affect its battery life? Juniper claims 10-12 hours from a full charge of the standard 43.2 watt-hour battery, and 5-6 hours more with the optional secondary 21.6 hours also installed. With the backlight set to medium, we saw 2.9 watts, and with the backlight set to its brightest setting, power draw rose to a still very modest 3.4 watts.In the Windows "Best performance" setting, we found a low of 2.6 watts at the lowest backlight setting, 3.4 watt with average backlight, and 3.9 watts with the backlight at its highest. Those draws are about 25% higher than we measured on a Mesa 2 in 2016, but as you can see in the table above, theoretical battery life still exceeds Juniper's estimates.GNSS positioningGiven Juniper System's emphasis on all sorts of field data collection, GNSS — the Global Navigation Satellite System — has always been an important part of Juniper's products and product strategy. GPS performance, often glossed over as an afterthought by other manufacturers, is a standard part of every Juniper Systems spec sheet. In fact, the GNSS section is usually among the most detailed. Juniper is fully aware of what integrated positioning hardware can and cannot do. If onboard GNSS isn't powerful or precise enough for a given task, the company offers its own Geode standalone real-time sub-meter GPS receiver (RuggedPCReview did a detailed overview and analysis of the Geode here) shown to the right. In Windows-based systems (which don't have GNSS integrated into a System-on-Chip like many ARM-based devices do), positioning is often an add-on in the form of a third-party GNSS module.
