About Bounty hounds
Killing alien colonists in the name of the Human race. Namco's Bounty Hounds came as a nice surprise for anyone visiting the Tokyo Games Show this last September. At the time, no one had really heard of it. But there it was in playable form for all to see and experience. And, thankfully, it kicked all sorts of futuristic ass. Bounty Hounds has since showed up only once in playable form, at Namco's recent fall press event in San Francisco. Fortunately for those who saw the game in Japan, last night's event featured a brand spankin' new build with more enemies, weapons and worlds. But first, there's narrative to discuss. To start, the story in Bounty Hounds takes place far in the future. The Human race finds itself in an intergalactic relay against a variety of alien species to colonize as many planets in the galaxy as possible. Deciding they need a helping hand, the Human race hires a mercenary group known as the Bounty Hounds to eradicate alien life on planets the Humans want to colonize. They're interplanetary conquistadors, in other words, and they're tasked with slaughtering indigenous cultures all over the cosmos. Bounty Hounds offers 40 missions set on four unique alien worlds. These worlds are inhabited by 40 different alien races, offering tons of variety when it comes time to exterminating them. While the demo on display only showed off a handful of these races, each looked quite different and boasted different weapons and attack patterns. The game revolves around Maximillian, a member of the Bounty Hounds group. Not much is known about Maximillian apart from the fact he's a total bad ass. Also, there's the fact he can use some 500 items, including weapons and armor, to help him dish out serious pain. Players can equip laser cannons, rocket launchers, swords, axes, grenades, machine guns and a ridiculous number of high-tech gadgets and armor. There's a good chance many players will spend hours just trying to locate specific weapons and pieces of armor. When in actual combat, players can only use six of the 500 available weapons. Players can choose up to three weapons for each arm, making selection of said weapons rather important. After all, it would suck to land on a planet with projectile-shooting aliens when all Maximillian has are short-range pistols or, worse still, melee weapons. Actually using these weapons in combat feels pretty intuitive, thanks to series of dynamic in-game menus triggered by pressing the right shoulder button. Players can swap available armor, weapons and upgrade modules without breaking their stride. One of the new things gathered from Namco's recent event was that Maximillian can either score weapons from slain opponents or purchase them between missions onboard a giant ship. Apparently, every one of the 500 items is available for purchase, but it's not clear whether every weapon will appear in the ship's item shop from the start of the game. To NPC characters for story updates, small talk, etc. Also on the ship was some kind of medical lab, where players can presumably modify character attributes and the like. Also new to this particular build of Bounty Hounds is an updated control scheme. Instead of controlling the main character with the D-Pad, players can now use the analog stick. It's a pretty good change overall. It definitely feels better anyway and offers a greater degree of freedom and fluidity. And damn, is it ever needed. Players will need to blast through wave after wave of hostile aliens, each of which adapts to a player's weapons and armor specifications. For instance, if a particular piece of armor offers defense against laser blasts, aliens will stop firing lasers and move in with melee weapons. Bounty Hounds looked good several months ago and it looks even better today. Characters animate smoothly and each alien world offers an array of groovy weather effects and environmental flourishes.
