After a long and interesting (but mostly quiet) development cycle, Activision finally went on the road to demo its impressive new motocross racer, MTX Mototrax. Yes, it's changed names - from Travis Pastrana's Pro MotoX when it was first announced in April 2002 to MTX: Mototrax featuring Travis Pastrana to (hopefully) its final name, MTX Mototrax. But along with the superficial name changes, which mean very little in the end, it's crystal clear that major work has gone into creating hardcore and unique motocross title. In development by the team that brought Nintendo 64 gamers ExciteBike 64, Left Field's MTX Mototrax is a fast, deep and attractive motorcycle endeavor. What makes this one any better than the horde of others that seem to bring more of the same? To be honest, this particular genre is a hard one to crack, and so everyone's had a hard time of it. But the things that caught my eye right away are the speedy 60 FPS, the online play for both PS2 and Xbox, and the easy-to-pick-up controls. MTX Mototrax offers players thee major licenses to work with (Suzuki, Yamaha and KTM), but dozens of bikes to unlock, 13 pro riders from which to pick (including Travis Pastrana), and 125cc and 250cc 2-stroke bikes, plus 250cc and 450cc 4-stroke bikes across 24 levels. Comprised of 60% racing and 40% freeride/freestyle, Activision's racer delves into the classic hardcore supercross and motocross racers that real fans adore, plus the freeride and freestyle arenas in which to experiment, goof off and push your skills to the limit. There's even a track editor you can customize. Starting with Career mode, players right from the start can build their rider. The create-a-player function is initially moderately hefty with gear, clothing and equipment, but later on it opens into an impressive treasure chest of goodies once players unlock new items by beating racers, acing contests and meeting goals. How does the system work? With cash. If gamers race well, they earn money, and with they can purchase sponsorships, gear and equipment upgrades. With the cash, they can also spend it to unlock exclusive free-ride environments. From shirts, jerseys, gloves, boots, helmets, to kneepads, underpadding and more, players can suit up their rider (oh yeah, and they can type in their name in the license plate) to customize and personalize their rider dude. The hub level at Pastrana's compound gives players a step-by-step tutorial, which is when they can try out the four different camera angles, get used to the physics engine, and play around doing donuts, managing their preloads, and the like. Two of the four camera angles grabbed my attention right away, the first-person angle (which is intense and a little dizzying, but very cool) and the bird's eye perspective (which harkens back to the early arcade days). Function. While gamers can get down with one- to two-player competitions offline, the PS2 and Xbox versions offer four and eight player online competitions, respectively. Activision hasn't revealed all its online plans just yet, but expect to see non-traditional freestyle and freeride minigames in both versions. The team plans to offer downloadable ghost riders and has some other plans cooking up for long-term replay value. With regard to music, Activision has yet to offer its score, but expect a deep and varied score of licensed music, similar to those found in its other extreme sports titles. Xbox players can rip their own music and hear songs in Dolby Digital 5.1, while PS2 owners can listen to crisp tunes in Dolby Pro Logic II. Although MTX Mototrax has remained under the game radar for some time now, players interested in a mix of arcade and sim-style motocross and a fast, deep game should keep their eyes on this one. The sense of speed, quick controls, and the promise of online competition is even enough to get someone like me, who's not terribly interested in motocross, eager and willing to play.
