This software KB explains a quick and easy method for DoD data wiping using BitRaser Drive Eraser.The DoD 5220.22-M Standard for data wiping specifies the pattern and passes for overwriting the data stored on hard disk drives (HDDs) with an added verification step to ensure that the overwritten data is destroyed beyond the scope of recovery. BitRaser Drive Eraser software performs certified DoD data wiping as per the patterns and passes specified in the DoD 5220.22-M standard. The software tool generates a tamper-proof erasure report with details of the DoD data wiping methodology duly documented on the report.Steps to perform DoD data wiping using BitRaser Drive Eraser:Follow these quick instructions to start wiping your hard disk drive using the DoD 5220.22-M method in less than 15 minutes.Note: Visit the BitRaser Drive Eraser deployment guide for more detailed instructions. Requirements Blank USB: 1 GB or more for creating a bootable wiping media Internet: Ethernet or Wi-Fi Storage mediaStage 1: Download the BitRaser Drive Eraser ISO file Log in to your BitRaser cloud account. Click the Download BitRaser Drive ISO link in the dropdown menu. Stage 2: Create BitRaser Drive Eraser bootable USB media In this stage, you will create a bootable USB media by burning BitRaser Drive Eraser ISO image on a USB drive. To burn the ISO image, you will use Rufus – an-open source tool commonly used for creating bootable media. The bootable USB drive will allow you to perform DoD wiping without installing the BitRaser software. Here are the steps to create the bootable USB media: Visit to download Rufus. Install the Rufus application on your storage media and then connect a USB drive to the system. Launch Rufus and follow the instructions in the below-annotated image. Click START to initiate the next steps for bootable USB media creation. CLICK 'YES' on the pop-up message box to proceed further. Click OK on the final pop-up confirmation message to start burning the BitRaser Drive Eraser ISO file on USB. After the process is completed, you will have a bootable USB media to initiate the data wiping process as per the DoD 5220.22-M standard.Stage 3: Enable USB booting on your storage mediaStart data wiping from the hard disk drive using the DoD 5220.22-M Standard, as follows: Connect the bootable USB media to the host machine (laptop or desktop PC) you need to wipe. In this step, you can also plug in any external hard disk drive(s) to the host machine if you need to erase them. Power ON the host machine and press the Function keys to enter the Boot menu Select USB Device, and press Enter. The computer will boot, and BitRaser Menu will appear. Press Enter to initialize

BitRaser File Eraser / 4. Working with the Software / 4.6. Working on Reports / 4.6.4. Change Report Settings BitRaser File Eraser also provides you an option to customize the reports. To customize the report:1. Run BitRaser File Eraser.2. Select Reports from the Select Option tabs displayed on the left pane of the screen.3. Select the Report Settings button located at the bottom left of the screen. The Report Settings dialog box appears. 4. In the Report Settings dialog box, you can edit the following fields: Field Name Description Erasure Person Specify Name and Department of erasure person. Validator Person Specify Name and Department of validator person. Signature Settings This section allows you to add a signature image of the technician and validator. Select Technician Signature Image (170 x 48 PNG) Select Validator Signature Image (170 x 48 PNG) You can change the technician's signature image here. You can change the validator’s signature image here. Image Settings This section allows you to add the top-right logo and watermark image. Select Top Logo (170 x 48 PNG) Select Watermark (170 x 48 PNG) You can change the top logo image of the report here. You can change the watermark image of the report here. Header Settings You can either enter Header information like header text or header image here. Enter Header Text (max 30 characters) Enter the header text. Note: You can reset Report Settings fields using the Reset button located at the bottom right of the Report Settings dialog box.Note: Signature images, Logo, and Watermark image size needs to be the same as specified in Report Settings. BitRaser File Eraser will accept images with a specified size only. In the case of a size mismatch, BitRaser File Eraser will continue to use the previously selected images.5. After making the required changes to Report Settings, click Save to update settings.Note: Modifications made to report settings within BitRaser File Eraser will reflect in newly generated reports on the BitRaser Cloud, but not in previously generated reports. Specifically, only the Erasure Person and Validator Person details get updated according to your changes, while all other information remains unchanged.
